IS DUKE WILLIAM RUNNING SCARED?

With everything quiet in the north and the south, the only question now on everyone’s lips is ‘Where’s Willy?’ Clearly the King expected an invasion during the regular fighting season. The King’s forces are all trained and ready but there is no sight of any ships from Normandy. What is Duke William playing at?

THE KING’S BIG DECISION

With no ships on the horizon and food and resources running low, the King is in a dilemma. The men have been away from home now for three months and it is harvest time in the fields. The loyal fyrd are both tired and anxious to return home.

Secondly, it is getting late in the fighting calendar for an invasion and perhaps the men could be stood down. If William’s ships are sighted by the lookouts, the fyrd can quickly be recalled but many hope that that day will never come.

FYRD DISBANDED & FLEET RECALLED

Today, with their provisions all gone, King Harold relays the order to disband the fyrd but be held in reserve should there be an invasion from Normandy. The Fleet are recalled to London. They are to sail around the Kent coast but must hurry as the equinoctial gales are imminent.
